Recoating a timber floor without sanding

Step 1: Prepare floor by cleaning with Cabot's Floor Clean

  • Floors with dulled sheen and minor scratches can be recoated without sanding. Floors with significant scratches, marking or flaking coatings will need to be sanded to a smooth surface before coating.
  • Thoroughly clean the surface with Cabot's Floor Clean. Mix 2 capfuls of Floor Clean into 4 litres of water. Mop on to floor to remove any dirt build up.
  • Allow floor to dry.

Step 2: Test the floor coating will adhere to your floor

  • Apply one coat of CFP Floow Water Based to a small test area (approx 20cm square).
  • Allow 3 hours to dry
  • Firmly apply a piece of sticky tape to the coated surface and pull it off quickly.
  • If no coating is removed: the floor is adequately prepared for coating. Proceed to step 3.
  • If some of the coating is removed on the tape: the coating won't stick to the existing surface so the floor needs to be sanded to a dull surface.

  • Cut in around the edges of the floor with a good quality synthetic bristle brush. Work in one section at a time.
  • Apply CFP Floor Water Based with a lambswool pad applicator or short nap (6-10mm) roller.
  • Work along the full length of 3-4 boards at a time, keeping a wet edge.
  • Allow to dry for 3 hours.
  • Apply a second and third coat as above allowing 3 hours between each coat. Three coats are required for floor-grade durability.
