How to varnish timber

Applying Varnish

Step 1. Surface Preparation

Sand new timber to a smooth finish with 180grit or finer sand paper. Previously varnished coatings will also need a light sand to remove the sheen.

Step 2. Apply the first coat.

Apply varnish with a good quality synthetic brush. Brush in the direction of the wood grain. Allow the first coat to dry.

Step 3. Apply susequent coats.

Apply a second coat using the above method. For a flawless finish, a light sand with 240grit or finer sand paper may be required between coats. For interior projects, two coats may be sufficient, for exterior projects, three or more coats may be required.
