Hot tip!

Fill holes and imperfections with a suitable timber putty if required.

Prep New Timber
  • Scrub damp timber with Cabot’s New Timber Prep, following the label instructions.
  • This process draws out tannins and oils, so you can skip the 4–6 week weathering period.

Clean
  • After using New Timber Prep, clean the surface with Cabot’s Deck Clean, following the label instructions.

Remove Excess Water
  • Use the squeegee on Cabot’s Deck Prep brush to remove any excess water from the surface.

Dry
  • Allow the timber to dry for at least 1 hour before coating.

Clean
  • Wash exterior surfaces with Cabot’s Deck Clean, following the label instructions.

Test Readiness

Sprinkle water on the timber:

  • If water beads: Repeat the application of Deck Clean.
  • If water absorbs: The surface is ready for coating.

  • For best results, sand timber back to fresh substrate.

How to prep

Apply with Brush, Decking Applicator.

Stir
  • Stir thoroughly with a broad, flat paddle before and during use.

Apply
  • Apply liberally along the length of the board.
  • Include exposed edges and end grain using a brush or pad applicator.

Second Coat
  • Allow the first coat to dry, then apply a second coat using the same method.

Build Color
  • Continue applying additional coats until you achieve the desired depth of color.

How to stain your deck

Every 12 months check your coated timber for changes in colour or water repellency diminishes due to weathering.

Clean the surfaces with Deck Clean as per label instructions.
